To my students:Even though this is our good-bye, please view it as an opportunity to understand change. You will continue with your education, as will I. If anything, I hope that I have become a great role model in work ethic, that we are always learning, and knowing when you have fulfilled the needs of the current role. For yourself, I hope you find careers that you love, passionate about, and that you work with others that get you up in the morning with excitement. If not, move on. Your skills can be utilized elsewhere.
Pick a path that contributes to the community. Why do I say this? We are so focused on ourselves in this society but at the end of the day we all need one another, so contribute to that success. You spend so much time on your phones viewing others' lives because you ultimately need each other. So contribute to the community in a positive way. Many hands make light work and each of us can pitch in to make this place easier for all. I'm leaving you with some quotes to think about because they have guided me. You have a purpose and a role, so go find it. We find it by doing, by failing, and by eventually succeeding. I want you to stop being afraid to fail because failure is the wisest teacher of all. Lastly, I want to leave you with one piece of vital advice: People will not remember what you know, but they will remember how you made them feel when they were with you. Be good to others. I'm so proud of all of you and wish for you lives of satisfying hard work and contentment. Sincerely, Emily O'Ryan [email protected]

What will you learn:Acrylic painting...and also understanding that paintings (abstract) can visually reveal messages. We will talk more about "missing pieces" and what this means. Why should you care:It's up to you...but identifying missing pieces can help discover and mend ways. How will you demonstrate this:Take a look at projects...we will discuss as a class and you will begin working on the first step. Monday, April 22: -Begin practicing with color choices using colored pencil/pastel. At this point you should have a photo taken, and sketched out the design...by the end of class on Monday, you should have at least one mini sketch drawn out. Tuesday, April 23 -Follow demo with O'Ryan on how to use filabert brushes, how to create skin color, and how to blend. -Studio time doing: Sketch out two more examples using colored pencil/pastel for ideas. Look at ideas below for sketching. Remember: color meanings. Need support understanding color meanings: click here. Block day, April 24 - Friday, April 26: -Either finish the third sketch or begin painting. Consider each of the sketches and determine which one captivates your overall message. Remember to clean your brushes at the end of class. If you do not clean the brushes, you murder them. I am not ordering any more this year...Do not be mean to brushes. Announcements:
Monday, April 22, 3 - 4:30 -- Photoshoot and Historical Walk in Riverside Cemetery
This is what you said you would be learning:
Techniques: - How to carve: carve away from oneself. - Carving like a plane is landing on the runway...no stabbing...scoop. - Do not carve the sharpie lines because you need the negative space. Printing: - Multiple prints needed because you need a non-salty print. Turn in three non-salty prints on website. - Have all your stuff ready to go: materials: watercolor papers, brayer, Speedball block printing ink, branisher (O’Ryan calls it a flattener), Vocab: texture, value, direction, contour lines, salty/non-salty, negative space Landscapes/flowers/animals/cartoons: draw this if you don’t know what to draw. What you say on why you should care: -Carving is symbolic of "taking away the negative in life." -Carving is like "Getting away from the negative around you to show something beautiful." -Colors used can show meaning of what you want to say. -It's an opportunity to show happiness by removing the sad. How will you demonstrate you learned this: Monday, April 1: -students will continue carving their plates. Printing could start today. If you print and do not like it or need to modify the plate, clean it off and then carve more. Tuesday, April 2: -studio time to carve plate and do some printing. The goal is to present on website three non-salty prints. Block day: April 3/4 (Thursday) Students attending the field trip to Sante Fe need to be at the north parking lot with their overnight bag before 6am. -students in class: studio time working on printmaking. It takes time to print three non-salty images. Do not neglect the time. Friday, April 5: -post on your website under "Portfolio and Artist Statements" the three non-salty prints and type out your artist statement. Refer back to visual for support in writing an artist statement. Worth 100 pts. Announcements regarding field trip: All information on the field trip can be found here. - Be on the bus, which will be in the north parking log, before 6am on Thursday, April 4. We will return by 10pm on Friday, April 5. - Final payment for the trip is due Monday, April 1. - Payment options can be seen here. Venmo payment can be made to emily-oryan. What are you learning:All students will demonstrate full of understanding of the tempera batik project by posting on their online portfolios and writing an artist statement that explains what they learned. Afterwards, they will learn about the new project: printmaking and begin forming their own piece. This is what you said you would be learning: Techniques: - How to carve: carve away from oneself. - Carving like a plane is landing on the runway...no stabbing...scoop. - Do not carve the sharpie lines because you need the negative space. Why should you care about this:You will tell me this. For the tempera batik, Meredith Rigsby wrote this: 1. Painting the three layers relates to life because as you grow and gain new experiences, you become more resilient. 2. Painting the entire image black symbolizes dark times in life, but it could also symbolize an non-negative experience that changes you. 3. Washing off the paint could show how the experiences you have change you since it leaves some of it behind, but overall adds to the painting to make it more beautiful. How will you demonstrate this:Tuesday, 3.5.19

Why should you care:Um...you tell me. How will you demonstrate this:Monday, 2.25.19 -As a family we will get together and discuss how this projects relates to life...the "why" of this project. At your tables, please discuss with each other: 1. How does the idea of painting three layers of paint relate to life? Give us examples. 2. How does painting over your entire image with black relate to life? Give your group examples. 3. How does washing off the black relates to life? Give us examples.
